Aruna Lama was born on 9 September, 1945 to Surya Bahadur Lama and Sanmaya Lama in Darjeeling. Her uncle inspired her to sing from the age of 7. She attended St. Teresa's School in Darjeeling and sang in many cultural programs held in her school. She influenced her friends and teachers with her melodious voice. Aruna Lama married Sharan Pradhan, who was a musician, in 1963 but her husband died in 1974. She was left with two children but she continued to sing even with all her struggles till the end of her life.
Aruna Lama started singing from an early age. She started taking singing or music classes from great musician Amber Gurung. Her tutor was so impressed with her singing that he gave her the title "Nightingale of the Hills". Her first song was composed by Amber Gurung and written by Bhupi Sherchan in 1961. Her songs immediately touched the hearts of the people as her songs were about youth and sadness. Aruna Lama was honored by many awards in both Nepal and India. Some of her classic hits are Pohor Saal Khusi Fatda, Eh Kancha, Phool Lai Sodhe, Hera Na Hera Kancha, Lahare Bara Ghumaune Chautari and Eklai Basda etc.
